The Road Ends Here

"I came upon this dead end sign in the woods, and I thought it poignant that the city should think it necessary to erect a sign to warn us not to go further, as though the encroaching trees--standing like bouncers flanking the door of a nightclub--were not enough of a deterrent.

I'm often asked if this is a piece about the fearsome, unforgiving fury of nature, but it's not; it's just a parable about how people are always going places they're not welcome."
